Cavaillé-Coll, Tango, Passion!
It was before her first visit to Argentina that Meg encountered the beautiful organs of Buenos Aires, and it was Rafael Ferreyra whose virtual tour of these lovely instruments created the desire for a personal visit. Once on the scene, there was only one response -Such an experience must be shared! Meg's fascination with instruments of earlier times has focused on the organs of the Baroque, and particular, the antique organs of Italy and the fascinating heritage of their music. This interest resulted in several "Organs of Italy" tours in the 1990's, and more recently, as a guest leader with Michael Barone and a "Pipedreams"-sponsored Italian tour. Margaret Irwin-Brandon is Founder and Director Emerita of Arcadia Players Baroque Orchestra and Director of Music, Unitarian Universalist Society of Greater Springfield (MA)) A Fulbright Scholar in Germany, she has enjoyed a career on several music faculties, including Mount Holyoke College, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, University of Oregon and others.
Rafael Ferreyra, a native of Buenos Aires shares with Meg his passion for historic organs, especially the Cavaille-Coll instruments which arrived in Argentina at the turn of the XIX century. These instruments together with several more which arrived from Germany, Italy and England represent The Last Frontier of organs to be visited and enjoyed in this extremely meridional southamerican latitude.
Rafael is an active international organ recitalist, teacher and composer. Between 2001 and 2004 he lived and worked in the US while keeping his position as organist at the Basílica del Sagrado Corazón in Buenos Aires. With organist and researcher David Merello, developed a web site devoted to show the Cavaillé-Coll Organs in Buenos Aires city and other important instruments placed in Argentina. He is also the author of the video Organos Notables de Buenos Aires (Notable organs of Buenos Aires) which features the most relevant instruments in the city, many of which are included in this organ tour.
